Amoxil (Amoxicillin) is used in treatment of : skin and skin structure infections, otitis media, sinusitis, respiratory infections, genitourinary infections, endocarditis prophylaxis, postexposure inhalational anthrax prophylaxis, management of ulcer disease due to helicobacter pylori.

Amoxil action : |

Amoxil binds to bacterial cell wall, causing cell death.Therapeutic effects of Amoxil : bactericidal action, spectrum is broader than penicillins.

Spectrum : active against : streptococci, pneumococci, entrococci, haemophilus influenzae, escherichia coli, proteus mirabilis, neisseria meningitidis, neisseria gonorrhoeae, shigella, Chlamydia trachomatis, salmonella, borrelia burgdorferi.

Amoxil contraindications and precautions : |

Amoxil is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity to penicillins, tablets for oral suspension (Dispermox) contain aspartame; avoid in patients with phenylketonuria.

Please use Amoxil cautiously in : severe renal insufficiency (decrease dose if CCr < 30ml/min); infectious mononucleosis, acute lymphocytic leukemia, or cytomegalovirus infection (increase risk of rash); Patients with a history of cephalosporin allergy; Amoxil has been used safely in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Amoxil adverse reactions and side effects : |

Amoxil (Amoxicillin) adverse reactions and side effects can be : seizures (only in high doses), diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, elevated liver enzymes, rashes, urticaria, blood dyscarsias, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, serum sickness, superinfection.

Amoxil dosage : |

Oral administration (adults) - 250-500 mg of Amoxil at every 8 hours or 500-875 mg at every 12 hours (not to exceed 2-3 g of amoxicillin per day)

Oral administration (childrens > 3 months) - 25-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses at every 8 hours or 25-50 mg/kg/day individual doses at every 12 hours.Acute otitis media due to highly resistant strains of s.pneumoniae : 80-90 mg/kg/day divided at every 12 hours.

Postexposure inhalational anthrax prophylaxis : < 40 kg : 45 mg/kg/day in divded doses at every 8 hours; > 40 kg : 500 mg of Amoxil at every 8 hours.

Oral administration (infants < 3 months and neonates) : 20-30 mg/kg/day in divided doses at every 12 hours.

How to administer Amoxil : |

Oral administration : administer Amoxil around the clock.You can take Amoxil without regards to meals or with meals to decrease gastrointenstinal side effects.Capsules contents may be emptied and swallowed with liquids.Chewable tablets of Amoxil should be crushed or chewed before swallowing with liquids.

Shake oral suspension before administering.Suspension may be given straight or mixed in formula, milk, fruit juice, water or gingerale.Administer immediately after mixing.Discard refrigerated reconstituted suspension after 10 days.

Take Amoxil (Amoxicillin) around the clock and to finish the drug completely as directed, even if feeling better.Sharing of this medication may be dangerous.

Only for women - If you take oral contraceptives, use an alternate or additional nonhormonal method of contraception during Amoxil therapy and until next menstrual period.

Report signs of superinfection (furry overgrowth on the tongue, vaginal itching or discharge, loose or foul-smelling stools) and allergy.

Notify health care professional immediately if diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, or bloody stools occur and don't treat with anti diarrheals without consulting health care professionals.

Notifiy health care professional if symptoms don't improve

Persons with a history of rheumatic heart disease or valve replacement should know about the importance of using antimicrobial prophylaxis before invasive medical or dental procedures.
