Augmentin indications : |

Augmentin (Amoxicillin / Clavulanate) is used in the treatment of a variety of infections including : skin and skin structure infections, otitis media, sinusitis, respiratory tract infections, genitourinary tract infections.

Augmentin action : |

Augmentin binds to bacterial cell wall, causing cell death; spectrum of amoxicillin is broader than penicillin.Clavulanate resists action of beta-lactamase, an enzyme produced by bacteria that is capable of inactivating some penicillins.

Therapeutic effects of Augmentin : bactericidal action against susceptible bacteria.

Augmentin is active against : streptococci, pneumococci, enterococci, haemophilus influenzae, escherichia coli, proteus mirabilis, neisseria meningitidis, neisseria gonorrhoeae, staphylococcus aureus, klebsiella pneumoniae, shigella, salmonella and moraxella catarrhalis.

Distribution  Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : diffuses readily into most body tissues and fluids; doesn't readily enter brain/cerebrospinal fluid; cerebrospinal fluid penetration is increased in the presence of inflamed meninges; crosses the placenta and enters breast milk in small amounts.

Augmentin contraindications and precautions : |

Augmentin (Amoxicillin Clavulanate) is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity to penicillins; hypersensitivity to clavulanate; Augmentin chewable tablets contain aspartame and should be avoided in phenylketonurics; history of Augmentin associated cholestatic jaundice.

Use Augmentin cautiously in : severe renal insufficiency (dose reduction necessary), infectious mononucleosis, hepatic impairment.

Augmentin adverse reactions and side effects : |

Augmentin side effects and adverse reactions can be : seizures (only in high doses), diarrhea, hepatic dysfunction, nausea, vomiting, pseudomembranous colitis, vaginal candidiasis, rashes, urticaria, blood dyscrasis, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis and serum sickness, superinfection.

Augmentin dosage : |
Most infections (dosing based on amoxicillin component) :
- Oral administration (adults and children over 40 kg) : 250 mg of Augmentin every 8 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours.
Serious infections and respiratory tract infections :
- Oral administration (adults and children over 40 kg) :
- 875 mg ever 12 hours or 500 mg every 8 hours.
- Acute bacterial sinusitis : 2000 mg of Augmentin every 12 hours for 10 days as extedend release product (Augmentin XR).
- Community acquired pneumonia : 2000 mg every 12 hours for 7 - 10 days as extended release product.
Recurrent (or persistent) acute otitis media due to multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella catarrhalis :
- Oral administration (children under 40 kg) : 80 - 90 mg / kg / day in divided doses every 12 hours for 10 days.

Augmentin renal impairment : |
Oral administration (adults) :
- CCr 10 - 30 ml / min : 250 - 500 mg every 12 hours (don't use 875 mg tablet).
- CCr < 10 ml /min : 250 - 500 mg every 24 hours.

How to administer Augmentin : |
- Administer Augmentin around the clock.
- Administer Augmentin at the start of a meal to enhance absorption and to decrease gastrointestinal side effects.Don't administer with high fat meals because clavulanate absorption os decreased.
- Augmentin XR tables are scored and can be broken for ease of administration.Capsule contents may be emptied and swallowed with liquids.
- Augmentin chewable tablets should be crushed or chewed before swallowing with liquids.
- Two 250-mg tablets are not bioquivalent to one 500-mg tablet; Augmentin 250-mg tablets and 250-mg chewable tablets are also not interchangeable.Two 500-mg tablets are not interchangeable with one 1000-mg Augmentin XR tablet; amounts of clavulanic acid and durations of action are diiferent.
- Don't administer 250-mg chewable tablets to children less than 40 kg due to clavulanate content.

Take Augmentin (Amoxicillin Clavulanate) around the clock and finish the drug completely as directed, even if feeling better.Sharing of this medication may be dangerous.

Women : If you're taking oral contraceptives, use an alternate or additional method of contraception during Augmentin therapy and until next menstrual period.

Report the signs of superinfection (vaginal itching or discharge, furry overgrowth on the tongue) and allery.

Notify health care expert immediately if diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever of bloody stools occur and don't treat it with antidiarrheals without consulting your prescriber.

Notify health care professional if symptoms don't improve or if nausea or diarrhea persits when Augmentin is administered with food.
