• Bactrim (Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole) is used in the treatment of : bronchitis, shigella entritis, otitis media, pheumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), urinary tract infections, traveler's diarrhea, prevention of PCP in HIV positive persons.
• Unlabeled uses of Bactrim : biliary tract infections, osteomyelitis, burn and wound infections, chlamydial infections, endocarditis, gonorrhea, intrabdominal infections, nocardiosis, rheumatic fever prohylaxis, sinusistis.

• Bactrim combination inhibits the metabolism of folic acid in bacteria at two different points.
• Therapeutic effects for Bactrim : Bactericidal action against susceptible bacteria.
• Spectrum : Bactrim is active against many strains of gram-positive aerobic pathogens including : streptococcus pneumoniae, staphylococcus aureus, nocardia and enterococcus.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
• Distribution Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : widely distributed, and crosses the blood-brain barrier and placenta and enters breast milk.
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : metabolized by the liver (20%); remainder excreted unchanged by the kidneys.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : Trimehtoprim - 6-11 hours; Sulfamethoxazole - 9-12 hours, both prolonged in renal failure.

• Bactrim is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, megaloblastic anemia secondary to folate deficiency, severe renal impairment, pregnancy, lactation or children < 2 months (can cause kernicterus in neonates).
• Use Bactrim cautiously in : impaired hepatic or renal function (dosage reduction if required CCr < 30 ml/min); HIV-positive persons (increased incidence of adverse reactions).

• Bactrim adverse reactions and side effects can be : fatigue, hallucinations, headache, insomnia, mental depression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomatitis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, crystalluria, rashes, photosensitivity, hemolytic anemia, leucopenia, allergic reactions and fever.

• Administer Bactrim around the clock with a full glass of water.Use calibrated measuring device for liquid preparations.
• Manufacturer recommends that no other medication or solution be mixed with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.

• Take Bactrim around the clock and finish drug completely as directed, even if feeling well.Take missed doses as soon as remembered unless almost time for next dose.Sharing this medication may be dangerous.
• Use sunscreen and protective clothin to prevent photosensitivity reactions.
• Notify health care professional if skin rash, sore throat, fever, mouth sores, or unusual bleeding or bruising occurs
• Notify health care professional if symtomps do not improve within a few days.
• You should know the importance of regular follow-up exams to monitor blood counts on prolonged therapy.
• During Bactrim therapy, drink plenty of fluids.
• Avoid OTC medications (aspirin, vitamin C) unless directed by prescriber.
