• Biaxin (Clarithromycin) is used to treat respiratory tract infections including streptococcal pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and pneumonia.Also Biaxin is used in the treatment and prevention of disseminated mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and in the treatment of the following pediatric infections : otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis, skin structure infections.A part of a combination regimen is used for ulcer disease due to helicobacter pylori.

• Biaxin inhibits protein synthesis at the level of the 50S bacterial ribosome.
• Therapeutic effects of Biaxin : bacteriostatic action.
• Biaxin is active against these gram-positive aerobic bacteria : staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus pneumoniae, streptococcus pyogenes.Also Biaxin is active against these gram-negative aerobic bacteria : haemophilus influenzae, moraxella catarrhalis and also is active against mycoplasma, legionella, helicobacter pylory, mycobacterium avium.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : rapidly absorbed (50%) after oral administration.
• Distribution Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : widely distributed; tissue levels may exceed those in serum.
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : 10% - 15% converted by the liver to 14 - hydroxyclarithromycin, which has anti-infective activity; 20% - 30% excreted unchanged in urine.Metabolized by and also inhibits the CYP3A enzyme system.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : for the 250 mg dose - 3 to 4 hours; for the 500 mg dose - 5 to 7 hours.

• Biaxin (Clarithromycin) is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity to clarithromycin, erythromycin or other macrolide anti-infectives; concurrent used of pimozide; pregnancy and lactation.
• Use Biaxin cautiously in : severe liver or renal impairment (dosage adjustment required if CCr is under 30 ml / min).

• Biaxin side effects and adverse reactions can be : headache, pseudomembranous colitis, diarrhea, nausea, taste perversion, abdominal pain or discomfort, vomiting (in children), leukopenia, coagulation abnormalities, rash (in children).

Oral administration (adults) :

• CCr < 30 ml / min - 250 mg 1-2 times daily, a 500 mg initial dose may be used.

Oral administration (children) :

• Take Biaxin (Clarithromycin) around the clock and finish drug completely as directed, even if feeling beter.Take missed doses as soon as possible, unless almost time for next dose.Don't double doses.Sharing of this medication may be dangerous.
• Report signs of superinfection (black, furry overgrowth on the tongue; vaginal itching).
• Notify health care expert if fever and diarrhea develop, especially if stool contains blood, pus or mucus.Don't treat diarrhea without consulting health care professional.
• If you're taking Retrovir (Zidovudine) you MUST know that you can take Biaxin only 4 hours within Retrovir.
• Notify health care expert if pregnancy is planned or suspected.
• Notify health care expert if symptoms don't improve within a few days.
• Biaxin may be taken with or without food.
• Don't refrigerate the suspension form; you should discard the unused portion after 14 days.
