Clarinex® (Desloratadine) patient handout

Clarinex available forms :
Tablets : 5 mg
Tablets (orally disintegrating) : 2,5 mg, 5 mg
Syrup : 2,5 mg, 5 ml
Clarinex indications :
  • Clarinex (Desloratadine) is used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial); chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Clarinex action :
  • Clarinex blocks peripheral effects of histamine released during allergic reactions.
  • Therapeutic effects of Clarinex : decreased symptoms of allergic reactions (nasal stuffiness, red swollen eyes).Decreased pruritus, reduction in number and size of hives in chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Pharmacokinetics for Clarinex :
Clarinex contraindications and precautions :
  • Clarinex is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity, lactation.
  • Use Clarinex cautiously in : persons with hepatic or renal impairment (decrease dose to 5 mg every other day); dosing for the elderly should consider reduced hepatic, renal or cardiac function, concomitant diseases, other drug therapy and increase risk of adverse reactions.Also the safety of Clarinex for children under 6 months has not been established yet.
Clarinex adverse reactions and side effects :
  • Clarinex (Desloratadine) adverse reactions and side effects can be : drowsiness (rare), pharyngitis, dry mouth, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis.
Clarinex dosage :
  • Oral administration (adults and children above 12 years) : 5 mg of Clarinex once daily.
Clarinex renal impairment :
  • Oral administration (adults and children above 12 years) : 5 mg every other day.
  • Oral administration (children 6-11 years) : 2,5 mg once daily.
  • Oral administration (children 12 months - 5 years) : 1,25 mg of Clarinex once daily.
  • Oral administration (children 6-12 months) : 1 mg once daily.
How to administer Clarinex :
  • Oral administration : Clarinex may be administered without regard to meals.
  • Clarinex Syrup : use calibrated measuring device to ensure accurate dose of syrup for children.
  • For rapidly disintegrating tablets (Clarinex Reditabs) : place on tongue.Tablet disintegrates rapidly and may be taken with or without water.Administer immediately after opening the blister.
Useful advices on Clarinex :
  • Take Clarinex (Desloratadine) as directed.Do not increase dose or frequency; does not increase effectiveness and may increase side effects.
  • Clarinex may rarely cause drowsiness.Avoid driving or other activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known.
  • Avoid taking alcohol or other central nervous system depressants concurrently with this drug.
  • Good oral hygiene, frequent rinsing of mouth with water and sugarless gum or candy may minimize dry mouth.You should notify dentist if dry mouth persists more than 2 weeks.
  • Clarinex may cause photosensitivity; use sunscreen or stay out of the sun to prevent burns.
