Claritin® (Loratadine) patient handout

Claritin available forms :
Syrup : 1 mg/ml
Tablets : 10 mg
Tablets (chewable) : 5 mg
Tablets (rapidly disintegrating) : 10 mg
Claritin indications :
  • Claritin (Loratadine) is used to relief the symptoms of seasonal allergies.Also Claritin is used in the management of chronic idiopathic urticaria and in the management of hives.
Claritin action :
  • Claritin blocks peripheral effects of histamine released during allergic reactions.
  • Therapeutic effects of Claritin : decreased symptoms of allergic reactions (nasal stuffiness; red, swollen eyes, itching)
Pharmacokinetics for Claritin :
Claritin contraindications and precautions :
  • Claritin (Loratadine) is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity, lactation.
  • Use Claritin cautiously in : persons with hepatic impairment or CCr < 30 ml/min; persons receiving drugs known to affect hepatic metabolism of drugs; increased risk of adverse reactions; pregnancy or children under 2 years (safety not established).
Claritin adverse reactions and side effects :
  • Claritin side effects and adverse reactions can be : confusion, drowsiness (rare), paradoxical excitation, blurred vision, dry mouth, gastro intestinal upset, photosensitivity, rash, weight gain.
Claritin dosage :
  • Oral administration (adults and children over 6 years) : 10 mg of Claritin once daily.
  • Oral administration (children from 2 to 5 years) : 5 mg of Claritin once daily.
Claritin renal impairment :
  • Oral administration (adults) : CCr < 30 ml/min - 10 mg every other day.
Claritin hepatic impairment :
  • Oral administration (adults) : 10 mg every other day.
How to administer Claritin :
  • Administer Claritin once daily.
  • For rapidly disintegrating tablets (Alavert, Claritin Reditabs) - place on tonge.Tablet disintegrates rapidly.May be taken with or without water.
Useful advices on Claritin :
  • Take Claritin (Loratadine) exactly as directed.
  • Claritin may cause dizziness or drowsiness.Avoid driving or other activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known.
  • Use sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent photosensitivity reactions.
  • Avoid taking alcohol or other central nervous system depressants concurrently with this drug.
  • Good oral hygiene, frequent rinsing of mouth with water, and sugarless gum or candy may minimize dry mouth.You should notify dentist if dry mouth persists more than 2 weeks.
  • Contact health care professional immediately if dizziness, fainting or fast or irregular hearbeat occurs or if symptoms persist.
  • Claritin should be taken once daily.
  • Use Claritin Reditabs tablet immediately after opening individual blister.
  • Increase fluids to 2 L/day to decrease secretions.
