• Famvir (Famciclovir) is used to treat acute herpes zoster infections (shingles).Also, Famvir is used in the treatment/suppression of recurrent herpes genitalis in immunocompetent patients; treatment of recurrent mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in HIV-infected patients.

• Famvir inhibits viral DNA synthesis in herpes-infected cells only.
• Therapeutic effects of Famvir (Famciclovir) : decreased duration of herpes zoster infection with decreased duration of viral shedding; decreased lesion formation and improved healing in recurrent HSV infection.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : following absorption, Famvir is rapidly converted in the intestinal wall to penciclovir, the active compound.
• Distribution Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : unknown.
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : mostly excreted by the kidneys.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : 2.1 to 3 hours (increased in renal impairment).

• Famvir is strongly contraindicated in : hypersensitivity.
• Use Famvir cautiously in : persons with impaired renal function (increased dosage interval/decreased dose recommended if CCr < 40-60 ml/min); geriatric persons (because of age related decrease in renal function); pregnancy, lactation or children less than 18 years (saftey not established yet).

• Famvir side effects and adverse reactions can be : headache, dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.

• Famvir (Famciclovir) therapy should be started as soon as herpes zoster is diagnosed, at least within 72 hours, preferably within 48 hours.
• Oral administration : Famvir may be administered without regard to meals.

• Take Famvir exactly as directed for the full course of therapy.If a dose is missed, take as soon as remembered if not just before next dose.
• Famvir does not prevent the spread of infection to others.Until all lesions have crusted, precautions should be taken around others who have not had chickenpox or varicella vaccine or people who are immunosuppressed.
• Condoms should be used during sexual contact and that no sexual contact should be made while lesions are present.
• Women with genital herpes should have yearly Papanicolaou smears because these women may be more likely to develop cervical cancer.
• Famvir doesn't cure genital herpes but can decrease the length and severity of symptoms.
• You should recognize the early signs and symptoms of herpes infection, such as tingling, itching and pain, and should report them.Famvir therapy is more effective if started within 48 hours of rash onset.
