Lybrel
®
(levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) is the first
low-dose birth control pill that stops the menstrual
cycle indefinitely. Lybrel is similar to other birth
control pills but it replaces the seven-day placebo
pill with a continuous daily hormone dose. |

Lybrel
works much the same way as regular birth control pills
and has the same rate of effectiveness (99%) in preventing
pregnancy. Lybrel contains the same widely used hormones
as other birth control pills but is taken every day
without a break for menstruation. The continual daily
dosing of these hormones no uterine lining is formed,
and so most women experience no bleeding or only some
spotting or break-through bleeding.
|
| |
|
Lybrel
is 99% effective as a birth control method when taken
as directed, making it one of the most dependable
forms of contraception. Lybrel is also the first US
FDA-approved oral contraceptive designed to stop menstruation.
This is especially beneficial for women who suffer
from severe cramps, heavy flow, PMS or other menstrual
discomforts. |
| |
|
Lybrel
birth control pills must be taken exactly as directed
and at intervals not exceeding 24 hours. It is recommended
that Lybrel be taken at the same time each day. The
dosage of Lybrel is one yellow tablet daily without
any tablet-free or placebo interval. Women who do
not wish to become pregnant after stopping Lybrel
should immediately use another method of birth control.

For
most women, Lybrel is safe to take. But the risks
associated with taking Lybrel increase significantly
if you smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes,
high cholesterol, a tendency to form blood clots,
are obese, have or have had clotting disorders, heart
attack, stroke, angina pectoris, cancer of the breast
or sex organs, jaundice, malignant or benign liver
tumors, major surgery with prolonged immobilization,
or have headaches with neurological symptoms. You
should not take Lybrel if you suspect you are pregnant
or have unexplained vaginal bleeding. Although cardiovascular
disease risks may be increased with Lybrel use in
healthy, non-smoking women over 40, there are also
greater potential health risks associated with pregnancy
in older women. Cigarette smoking increases the risk
of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood
vessels from Lybrel use. This risk increases with
age and with the amount smoked (15 or more cigarettes
per day has been associated with a significantly increased
risk) and is quite marked in women over 35 years of
age. Women who use Lybrel should not smoke.

Certain
drugs may interact with Lybrel to make them less effective
in preventing pregnancy or cause an increase in unscheduled
bleeding. Such drugs include rifampin, drugs used
for epilepsy such as barbiturates (for example, phenobarbital)
and phenytoin (Dilantin), primidone (Mysoline), topiramate
(Topamax), carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenylbutazone
(Butazolidin), some drugs used for HIV or AIDS such
as ritonavir (Norvir), modafinil (Provigil) and possibly
certain antibiotics (ampicillin and other penicillins,
and tetracyclines), and herbal products containing
St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum). You
may also need to use a non hormonal method of contraception
during any pill pack in which you take drugs that
can make oral contraceptives less effective. You may
be at higher risk for a specific type of liver dysfunction
if you take troleandomycin and oral contraceptives
at the same time. You should inform your health care
professional about all medicines you are taking, including
nonprescription products

Most
side effects of Lybrel are not serious. The most common
side effects of Lybrel are nausea, vomiting, unscheduled
bleeding, weight gain, breast tenderness, and difficulty
wearing contact lenses. These side effects, especially
nausea and vomiting, may subside within the first
three months of using Lybrel. A serious allergic reaction
to Lybrel is unlikely, but seek immediate medical
attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic
reaction to Lybrel include rash, itching, swelling,
dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other
effects of Lybrel not listed above, contact your doctor
or pharmacist.
