• MetroGel (Metronidazole Gel) is used to treat : inflammatory papules and pustules of acne rosacea; bacterial vaginosis.
• Uses of MetroGel : skin infections, minor burns, wounds, skin grafts, primary pyodermas, otitis externa.

• MetroGel interferes with bacterial protein synthesis.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : minimal absorption after topical or vaginal application.
• Distribution Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : widely distributed into most tissues and fluids, including cerebrospinal fluid; crosses the placenta and enters fetal circulation rapidly; enters breast milk in concentrations equal to plasma levels.
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : partially metabolized by the liver (30-60%), partially excreted unchanged in the urine, 6-15% eliminated in the feces.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : neonates : 25-75 hours; children : 6-12 hours.

• MetroGel is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity to parabens.
• Use MetroGel cautiously in persons with history or evidence of blood dyscrasia and in those with hepatic impairment.
• MetroGel-Vaginal should be used cautiously by persons with history of central nervous system diseases.Oral form may cause seizures and peripheral neuropathy.

• MetroGel adverse reactions and side effects can be : lacrimation if applied around eyes, transient redness, dryness, mild burning, stinging, pruritus, contact dermatitis, rash, cramps, pain, nausea, loose stools, metallic or bad taste in mouth, vaginal burning, overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms.

• Topical : Apply thin film of MetroGel (Metronidazole Gel) to affected area bid.
• Vaginal : One applicatorful (5 g) 2 times daily for 5 days.

• Avoid use of MetroGel around eyes.
• Clean area thoroughly before use and wait 15 to 20 minutes after cleaning skin before applying drug to minimize risk of local irritation.Cosmetics may be used after applying MetroGel.
• If local reactions occur, apply drug less frequently or stop using it and notify prescriber.
• Avoid sexual intercourse while using MetroGel-Vaginal.
• Avoid alcohol while being treated with MetroGel-Vaginal.
