• Capsules (delayed-release) : 20 mg, 40 mg

• Nexium (Esomeprazole) is used to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) including erosive esophagitis.With amoxicillin and clarithromycin to eradicate Helicobacter Pylori in duodenal ulcer disease or history of duodenal ulcer disease.Decrease risk of gastric ulcer during continuous NSAID therapy.

• Nexium binds to an enzyme on gastric parietal cells in the presence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.
• Therapeutic effects of Nexium : diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen with lessened gastroesophageal reflux; healing of duodenal ulcers; decreased incidence of gastric ulcer during continuous NSAID therapy.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : 90% absorbed following oral administration; food decreases absorption
• Distribution Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : unknown untill now.
• Protein binding : 97%
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : extensively metabolized by the liver (cytochrome P450 [CY450] system, primarily CY P2 C19 isoenzyme); less than 1% excreted unchanged in urine.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : 1.0 - 1.5 hour

• Nexium is strongly contraindicated in : hypersensitivity, lactation (not recommended).
• Use Nexium cautiously in : severe hepatic impairment (daily dose of Nexium should not exceed 20 mg), pregnancy (use only if clearly needed), children under 18 years (safety not established yet)

• Nexium (Esomeprazole) adverse reactions and side effects can be : headache, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, flatulence, nausea.

Severe hepatic impairment :

• Antacids may be used while taking Nexium.
• Oral administration : Administer at least 1 hour before meals.Nexium capsules should be swallowed whole.
• For persons with difficulty swallowing, place 1 tablespoon of applesauce in an empty bowl, open capsules and carefully empty the pellets inside onto applesauce.Mix pellets with applesauce and swallow immediately.Applesauce should not be hot and should be soft enough to swallow without chewing.Please, don't store applesauce mixture for future use.Tap water or ange juice, apple juice and yogurt have also been used.Do not crush or chew pellets.
• For persons with an Nastrogastric tube, Nexium delayed-release capsules can be opened and intact granules emptied into a 60 ml syringe and mixed with 50 ml of water.Replace plunger and shake syringe vigorously for 15 seconds, hold syringe with tip up and check for granules in tip.Attach syringe to Nastrogastric tube and administer solution.After administering, flush syringe with additional water.Don't administer if granules have dissolved or disintegrated.Administer immediately after mixing.
• Antacids may be used concurrently.
• Direct Intravenous : reconstitute each vial with 5 ml of 0,9% NaCl, LR or D5W.Don't administer solutions that are discolored or contain a precipitate.Stable at room temperature for up to 12 hours.You should administer over at least 3 minutes.
• Intermittent Infusion : dilute reconstituted solution to a volume of 50 ml.Solutions diluted with 0,9% NaCl or LR are stable for 12 hours and those diluted with D5W are stable for 6 hours at room temperature.Administer over 10-30 minutes.

• Take Nexium (Esomeprazole) as directed for the full course of therapy, even if feeling better.Take missed doses as soon as remembered but not if almost time for next dose.Do not double doses.
• Avoid alcohol, products containing aspirin or NSAIDs, and foods that may cause an increase in gastrointestinal irritation.
• Report onset of black, tarry stools; diarrhea; abdominal pain or persistent headache to health care professional promptly.
• Take Nexium at least 1 hour before a meal.
• Antacids can be used while taking drug unless otherwise directed by prescriber.
• Don't chew or crush drug pellets because this inactivates the drug.
• If you have difficulty swallowing Nexium capsules, mix contents of capsule with 1 tablespoon of soft applesauce and swallow immediately.
• Store capsules at room temperature in a tight container.
• Diabetic persons should know hypoglycemia may occur.
