Nordette (Levonorgestrel & Ethinyl Estraidol) is used in the prevention of pregnancy and regulation of menstrual cycle.Also Nordette is used in the management of acne in women over 14 years who desire contraception, have no health problems and have failed topical treatment.
Nordette provide a fixed dosage of estrogen over a 21-day cycle; ovulation is inhibited by suppression of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).Nordette may alter cervical mucus and the endometrial environment, preventing penetration by sperm and implantation of the egg.
Therapeutic effects of Nordette : prevention of pregnancy, decreased severity of acne.
Nordette (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) is contraindicated in : pregnancy, history of thromboembolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, liver tumors, lactation.
Use Nordette cautiously in : history of cigarette smoking or age over 30 - 35 years, presence or other cardiovascular risk factors, history of diabetes mellitus, bleeding disorders, concurrent anticoagulant therapy or headache.
Nordette should be used with extreme caution in prepubertal girls (safety not established yet).
Oral administration (adults) : On 21-day regimen, take first Nordette tablet on first Sunday after menses begin (take on Sunday if menses begin on Sunday) for 21 days, then skip 7 days and begin again.Regimen may also be started on first day of menses, continue for 21 days, then skip 7 days and begin again.Some regimens contain 7 placebo tablets, so that 1 tablet is taken every day for 28 days.
Take Nordette (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) as directed at the same time each day.Pills should be taken in proper sequence and kept in the original container.
If single daily dose is missed : take it as soon as remembered; if not until next day, take 2 tablets and continue on regular dosing schedule.
If 2 days in a row doses are missed : take 2 Nordette tablets a day for the next 2 days and continue on regular dosing schedule, using a second method of birth control for the remaining cycle.
If 3 days in a row doses are missed : discontinue Nordette and use another form of birth control until period begins or pregnancy is ruled out; the begin a new cycle of Nordette tablets.
For 28-day dosing schedule : if schedule is followed for first 21 days and 1 dose is missed of the last 7 tablets, it's important to take the first tablet of next month's cycle on the regularly scheduled day.
You'll need to use another form of contraception for the first 3 weeks when beginning to use Nordette.
A second method of birth control should be used during each cycle in which any of the following are used : ampicillin, corticosteroids, antiretroviral protease inhibitors, barbiturated, carbamazepine, chloramphenicol, dihydroergotamine, mineral oil, oral neomycin, penicillin V, phenylbutazone, primidone, rifampin, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, topiramate or valproic acid.
Discontinuing Nordette suddenly may cause withdrawl bleeding.
If nausea becomes a problem, eating solid food often provides relief.
Report signs and symptoms of fluid retention (swelling of ankles and feet, weight gain), thrmboembolic disorders (pain, swelling, headache, chest pain), mental depression, hepatic dysfunction (pruritus, dark urine) or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
Women with a strong family history of breast cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, abnormal mammograms or cervical dysplasia should be monitored for breast cancer at least yearly.
If pregnancy is suspected, stop taking Nordette and notify health care professional.
Cigarette smoking during Nordette therapy may increase risk of serious side effects, especially for women over age 35.
Use sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent increased pigmentation.
Nordette doesn't protect you against HIV or other sexually transmitted disease.
You MUST follow-up your routine physical exams including : blood pressure, breast, abdomen and pelvic examinations.
