Nutropin indications : |
-
Nutropin (Somatropin [rDNA origin] for injection) is used for : long term treatment of growth failure in children with inadequate secretion of endogenous growth hormone, long term treatment of short stature from Turner syndrome.Nutropin is used : to treat growth failure from chronic renal insufficiency up to time of renal transplantation; to replace endogenous growth hormone in adult persons with growth hormone deficiency.
|
|
Nutropin action : |
-
Nutropin is a purified growth hormone which recombine DNA origin that stimulates skeletal, linear, muscle and organ growth.
-
Therapeutic effects of Nutropin : increased skeletal growth in children with growth hormone deficiency, replacement of somatropin in deficient adults, decreased wasting in persons with AIDS, increased bone density in adult growth hormone.

Nutropin contraindications and precautions : |
-
Nutropin (Somatropin - rDNA origin) is contraindicated in persons with : acute critical illness from complications following open heart or abdominal surgery, closed epiphyses, active malignancy, active underlying intracranial lesion.
-
Use Nutropin cautiously in children with hypothyroidism and in those whose growth hormone deficiency is caused by an intracranial lesion.
|
|
Nutropin adverse reactions and side effects : |
-
Nutropin side effects and adverse reactions can be : headache, weakness, mild edema, transient edema, leukemia, mild hyperglycemia, hypothyroidism, localized muscle pain, injection site pain, antibodies to growth hormone.

Subcut administration (children) :
- Growth hormone inadequacy : 0.3 mg / kg.
- Chronic renal insufficiency : 0.35 mg / kg (1.05 units / kg) / week taken as daily Nutropin injections.
- Turner's syndrome : less than 0.375 mg / kg (1.125 units / kg) / week in 3 - 7 divided doses.
Subcut administration (adults) :
- less than 0.006 mg / kg daily; you may increase to 0.025 mg / kg / day in persons under 35 years or 0.0125 mg / kg in persons over 35 years.

Useful advices on Nutropin : |
-
Parents : learn the correct procedure for recontituting medication, site selection, technique for subcut injection, and disposal of needles and syringes.Review dosage schedule and report persistent pain or edema at injection site.
-
Administration of Nutropin (Somatropin - rDNA origin) to persons without growth hormone deficiency or after epiphyseal closure may result in acromegaly (coarsening of facial features; enlarged hands, feet and internal organs; increased blood glucose; hypertension).
-
You MUST follow-up with endocrinologist to ensure appropriate growth rate, to evalute lab work and to determine bone age by X-Ray exam.
-
Nutropin dose is synthetic and therefore is not capable of transmitting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, as was the original somatropin which was extracted from human cadavers.
-
Child with endocrine disorders (including growth hormone deficiency) may have an increased risk of slipped capital epiphyses.Notify prescriber immediately if you're notice that your child is limping.
-
Diabetics should monitor glucose level closely and report changes to prescriber.
-
Treatment may continue for years because regular assessments are required.
-
Nutropin treatment is very expensive.
-
Maintain a growth record and report knee or hip pain or limping right away to your health care professional.
