Ortho-Cyclen provide a fixed dosage of estrogen over a 21-day cycle; ovulation is inhibited by suppression of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).Ortho-Cyclen may alter cervical mucus and the endometrial environment, preventing penetration by sperm and implantation of the egg.

Ortho-Cyclen (Norgestimate and Ethinyl Estradiol) is contraindicated in persons with : thromboembolic disorders, cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease, diplopia or occular lesions arising from ophtalmic vascular disease, classic migraine, myocardial infarction, known or suspected breast cancer, known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia, benign or malignant liver tumors, active liver disease or history of cholestatic jaundice with pregnancy or previous use of hormonal contraceptives, and undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding.
Also Ortho-Cyclen is contraindicated in women who are or may be pregnant or breastfeeding.
Use Ortho-Cyclen cautiously in persons with : hyperlipidemia, hypertension, migraines, seizure disorders, asthma / cardiac or renal insufficiency.
Oral administration (adults) : On 21-day regimen, take first Ortho-Cyclen tablet on first Sunday after menses begin (take on Sunday if menses begin on Sunday) for 21 days, then skip 7 days and begin again.Regimen may also be started on first day of menses, continue for 21 days, then skip 7 days and begin again.Some regimens contain 7 placebo tablets, so that 1 tablet is taken every day for 28 days.
Take Ortho-Cyclen (Norgestimate and Ethinyl Estradiol) tablets at the same time each day; nightime doses may reduce nausea and headaches.
Use an additional method of birth control, such as condoms or a diaphragm with spermicide, for the first week of the first cycle.
Missing dose in mid-cycle greatly increases likelihood of pregnancy.
Missing an Ortho-Cyclen dose may cause spotting or light bleeding.
Ortho-Cyclen don't protect you against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.
If 1 Ortho-Cyclen tablet is missed : take it as soon as possible (2 tablets if remembered on the next day), and the continue regular schedule.You should use an additional mehtod of contraception for remainder of cycle.
If 2 Ortho-Cyclen tablets are missed : take 2 tablets a day for the next 2 days and then resume regular schedule.You should use an additional method of contraception for the next 7 days or preferably for the remainder of cycle.
If 2 consecutive Ortho-Cyclen tablets are missed in the third week or if you miss 3 consecutive pills : contact prescriber for instructions.
Common adverse effects such as headache, nausea, dizziness, breast tenderness, spotting and breakthrough bleeding, diminish after 3 to 6 months.
Avoid exposure to ultraviolet light or prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Report immediately : abdominal pain, numbness, pressure or pain in chest, shortness of breath, severe headche, visual distrubances, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, two consecutive missed menstrual period, lumps in the breast, swelling of hands or feet.
If one menstrual period is missed and Ortho-Cyclen tablets have been taken on schedule, continue taking them.If two consecutive menstrual periods are missed, stop drug and have pregnancy test.
