Ortho-Evra (Ethinyl Estradiol and Norelgestromin) is a combination of hormonal contraceptives who acts by suppressing gonadotropins.The primary mechanism of this action is ovulatory inhibition.However, changes in cervical mucus increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus, and changes in the endometrium decrease the likelihood of implantation.

Ortho-Evra contraindications and precautions : |

Ortho-Evra (Ethinyl Estradiol and Norelgestromin) is contraindicated : in patients hypersensitive to any component of this drug and in those with past history of deep vein thrombosis or related disorder; current or past history of cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease; past or current known or suspected breast cancer, endometrial cancer or other known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia; or hepatic adenoma or cancer and in those who are or may be pregnant.

Ortho-Evra is also contraindicated in persons with thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, valvular heart disease with complications, severe hypertension, diabetes with vascular involvment, headaches with focal neurologic symptoms, major surgery with prolonged immobilization, undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding, cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice with previous hormonal contraceptive use or acute or chronic hepatocellular disease with abnormal liver function.

Ortho-Evra should be used cautiously by persons with cardiovascular disease risk factors, with conditions that might be aggravated by fluid retention or with a history of depression.

Ortho-Evra side effects and adverse reactions can be : headache, emotional lability, thromboembolic events, miocardial infarction, hypertension, edema, cerebral hemorrhage, contact lens intolerance, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, gallbladder disease, menstrual cramps, changes in menstrual flow, vaginal candidiasis, hepatic adenomas, benign liver tumors, weight changes, upper respiratory tract infection, application site reaction, breast tenderness, enlargement or secretion.

You should know the importance of having regular annual physical examinantions to check for adverse effects or developing contraindications.

Ortho-Evra doesn't protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Apply the patch on the first day of menstrual cycle or the first Sunday of menstrual cycle.

Use a backup method of contraception for the first 7 days.

Apply immediately a new Ortho-Evra patch once the used patch is removed, on the same day of the week every 7 days for 3 weeks.Week 4 is patch fre.Bleeding is expected to occur during this time.

Apply each Ortho-Evra patch to a clean, dry area of the skin on the buttocks, abdomen, upper outer arm, or upper torso.Don't apply to the breasts or to skin that is red, irritated or cut.

Carefully fold the used patch in half so that it sticks to itself, before discarding.
