Plavix (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) is used in the reduction of atherosclerotic events (myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular death) in persons at risk for such events including recent myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina/non-Q-wave myocardial infarction), stroke or peripheral vascular disease.

Plavix inhibits platelet aggregation by irreversibly inhibiting the binding of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to platelet receptors.

Therapeutic effects of Plavix : decreased occurrence of atherosclerotic events in patients at risk.

Plavix contraindications and precautions : |

Plavix (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) is strongly contraindicated in : hypersensitivity, pathologic bleeding (peptic ulcer, intracranial hemorrhage), lactation.

Use Plavix cautiously in : persons at risk for bleeding (trauma, surgery or other pathologic conditions); history of gastrointestinal bleeding/ulcer disease; severe hepatic impairment; pregnancy or children (safety not established yet; use Plavix in pregnancy only if clearly indicated).

Plavix side effects and adverse reactions can be : depression, dizziness, fatigue, headache, pain, edema, hypertension, epistaxis, rhinitis, hemorrhage, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, gastritis, ulcers, purpura, arthralgia, bronchitis, coughing, dyspnea, upper respiratory tract infection, rash, pruritus, flulike syndrome.

Plavix dosage : |
Recent myocardial infarction, stroke or peripheral vascular disease :
- Oral administration (adults) : 75 mg of Plavix once daily.
Acute coronary syndrome :
- Oral administration (adults) : 300 mg of Plavix initially, then 75 mg once daily; aspirin 75-325 mg once daily should be taken concurrently.

How to administer Plavix : |
- Administer Plavix once daily without regard to food.
- Discontinue Plavix (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) 5 to 7 days before planned surgical procedures.

Useful advices on Plavix : |

Take Plavix (Clopidogrel Bisulfate) exactly as directed.Missed doses should be taken as soon as possible unless almost time for next dose; please don't double doses.

Notify health care professional promptly if fever, chills, sore throat or unusual bleeding or bruising occurs.

Notify health care professional of medication regimen prior to treatment or surgery.
-
Avoid taking OTC medications containing asipirin or NSAIDs without consulting health care professional.

It may take longer than usual to stop bleeding.Please refrain from activities in which trauma and bleeding may occur, and you should wear a seatbelt when in a car.

Inform all health care providers including dentists, before undergoing procedures or starting new drug therapy, that you take Plavix.
