Prilosec (Omeprazole) is used in : gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)/maintenance of healing in erosive esophagitis; duodenal ulcers (with or without anti-infectives for Helicobacter pylori); short term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer; pathologic hypersecretory conditions, including Zolinger-Ellison syndrome; reduction of risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill persons;

OTC (Over The Counter) : heart-burn occurring more than twice in a week.

Prilosec action : |

Prilosec binds to an enzyme on gastric parietal cells in the presence of acidic gastric pH, preventing the final transport of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.

Therapeutic effects of Prilosec : diminished accumulation of acid in the gastric lumen with lessened gastroesophageal reflux; healing of duodenal ulcers.

Use Prilosec cautiously in : liver disease (dosage reduction may be necessary); pregnancy, lactation or children less than 2 years (saftey not established yet).

Prilosec adverse reactions and side effects can be : dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, weakness, chest pain, abdominal pain, acid regurgitation, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, itching, rash, allergic reactions.

Prilosec dosage : |
Oral administration (adults) :
- GERD/erosive esophagitis - 20 mg or Prilosec once daily.
- Duodenal ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori - 40 mg daily in the morning with clarithromycin for 2 weeks, then 20 mg once daily for 2 weeks or 20 mg twice daily with clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily and amoxicillin 1000 mg twice daily for 10 days (if ulcer is present at beginning of therapy, continue Prilosec 20 mg daily for 18 more days); has also been used with clarithomycin and metronidazole.
- Gastric ulcer - 40 mg of Prilosec daily for 4-6 weeks.
- Reduction of the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill persons - 40 mg initially, then another 40 mg 6-8 hours later, followed by 40 mg once daily for up to 14 days.
- Gastric hypersecretory conditions - 60 mg of Prilosec once daily initially; you may increase up to 120 mg 3 times daily (doses more than 80 mg should be taken in divided doses).
- OTC - 20 mg once daily for up to 14 days.

How to administer Prilosec : |

Administer Prilosec (Omeprazole) doses before meals, preferably in the morning.Prilosec capsules should be swallowed whole; do not crush or chew.Capsules may be opened and sprinkled on cool applesauce, entire mixture should be ingested immediately and followed by a drink of water.Don't store it for future use.

Power for oral suspension - administer on empty stomach, at least 1 hour before a meal.For persons with nasogastric or enteral feeding, suspend feeding for 3 hours before and 1 hour after administration.Empty packet contents into a small cup containing 1-2 tablespoons of water.Don't use other liquids or foods.If it's administered through a nasogastric tube, suspend in 20 ml of water.Stir well and drink immediately.Refill cup with water and drink again.

Prilosec may be administered concurrently with antacids.

Useful advices on Prilosec : |

Take Prilosec (Omeprazole) exactly as directed for the full course of therapy, even if feeling better.Take missed doses as soon as remembered but not if almost time for next dose.Do not double doses.

Prilosec may cause occasional drowsiness or dizziness.Avoid driving or other activities requiring alertness until respons to medication is known.

Avoid alcohol, products containing aspirin or NSAIDs, and foods that may cause an increase in gastrointenstinal irritation.

Report onset of black, tarry stools; diarrhea; abdominal pain or persistent headache to health care professional promptly.

Prilosec OTC isn't intended to treat infrequent heartburn (one episode of heartburn a week or less) or for those who want immediate relief of heartburn.

Prilosec OTC may take 1 to 4 days for full effect, although some people may get complete relief of symptom within 24 hours.
-
Diabetic persons should know hypoglycemia may occur.

Avoid alcohol, salicylates, ibuprofen while taking Prilosec; may cause gastrointestinal irritation.
