What
are Viramune tablets? |
Viramune®
(Nevirapine) is an antiviral drug called a nonnucleoside
reverse transcriptase inhibitor or NNRTI.
Viramune is used to treat human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV) infection. Viramune may reduce the amount of
HIV in the blood and increase the number of CD4 cells
(T-cells) in the blood. Viramune is used in combination
with other drugs to treat the HIV virus. Viramune
will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS. You
may still develop other infections or conditions associated
with HIV. Generic Viramune tablets are not yet available. |

What
should my health care professional know before I take
Viramune? |
They
need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•liver disease, including hepatitis
•an unusual or allergic reaction to Viramune,
other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•breast-feeding
•pregnant (buy
Aviane) or trying to get pregnant |
| |
|
If
you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it
is almost time for your next dose, take only that
dose. Do not take double or extra doses. |
| |
What
should I watch for while taking Viramune? |
You
must visit your prescriber or health care professional
for regular checks on your progress and to watch for
possible reactions. You will need to have your blood
drawn regularly to monitor your therapy and your liver
function. Severe skin rashes (buy
Renova), liver reactions, or allergic reactions
may be seen with Viramune therapy, especially during
the first 18 weeks of treatment. If you develop a
rash at any time while you are taking Viramune, call
your health care provider immediately. Discuss any
new symptoms with your prescriber or health care professional.
Viramune will not cure HIV infection and you can still
get other illnesses or complications associated with
your health condition. Taking Viramune does not reduce
the risk of passing HIV infection to others through
sexual or blood contact. It is best to avoid sexual
contact so that you do not spread the disease to others.
For any sexual contact, use a condom. Be careful about
cuts, abrasions, and other possible sources of blood
contact. Never share a needle or syringe with anyone.
If you are a women of childbearing age and are using
hormone contraceptives (buy
Yasmin), then you should use another form of birth
control while taking Viramune. Viramune may decrease
the effectiveness of hormone birth control (buy
Ortho Tri-Cyclen) agents, including oral contraceptives. |
