• Zocor (Simvastatin) adjuncts to dietary therapy in the management of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemias.Reduction of lipids/cholesterol reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke sequelae (primary prevention and secondary prevention) and decreases the need for bypass procedures/angioplasty.

• Zocor inhibits an enzyme, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, which is responsible for catalyzing an early step in the synthesis of cholesterol. Zocor therapeutic effects : lowering of total and LDL cholesterol.Increase HDL and decrease VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides.Slowing of the progression of coronary artery disease with resultant decrease in myocardial infarction, stroke and need for myocardial revascularization.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : 85% absorbed but rapidly metabolized.
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : extensively metabolized by the liver (Simvastatin is metabolized by CYP3A4), most during first pass; excreted in bile and feces.Small amounts of Simvastatin are excreted unchanged by the kidneys.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : unknown

• Zocor is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug and in those with active liver disease or conditions that cause unexplained persistent elevations of transaminase levels.
• Also Zocor is contraindicated in pregnant and breat-feeding women and in women of childbearing age
• Please use Zocor cautiously in patients who consume large amounts of alcohol or have a history of liver disease.

• Zocor (Simvastatin) adverse reactions and side effects can be : headache, lens opacities, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatus, abdominal pain, live dysfunction, pancreatitis, rash, pruritus, photosensitivity, muscle cramps, myalgia, myositis, rhabdomyolysis, upper respiratory tract infection.

• Oral administration (adults) - 5-80 mg of Zocor once daily in the evening.Geriatric patients, patients with LDL < 190 mg/dl, or people receiving cyclosporine - 5mg of Zocor per day initially.Increase at 4 weeks intervals (not to exceed 10 mg of Zocor per day if you receive cyclosporine or 20 mg per day if you receive amiodarone or verapamil) up to 40 mg of Zocor per day.
• Oral administration (childrens 10-17 years) : 10 mg of Simvastatin per day initially, you may increase at 4 weeks intervals up to 40 mg/day (not to exceed 10 mg/day if you receive cyclcosporine or 20 mg/day in you're receiving amiodarone or verapamil).

• Oral administration (adults) : Severe renal impairment, 5 mg of Zocor per day initially, titrate carefully.

• Oral : Administration on an empty stomach decreases absorption by approximately 30%.Initial once-daily dose is administered with the evening meal.Administer extended release tablets at bedtime.Extended release tablets shoud be swallowed whole, do not crush, break or chew.

• Take Zocor (Simvastatin) with the evening meal because this enhances absorption and increases cholesterol biosynthesis
• You should talk to your doctor about proper dietary management of cholesterol and triglycerides.When appropriate, your doctor can recommend you weight control, exercise and smoking cessation programs.
• Inform prescriber if adverse reactions occur, particularly muscle aches and pains.
• Only for women - Stop taking Zocor and notifiy prescriber immediately if you're or may be pregnantor if you're breast feeding.
• Blood work and eye exam will be necessary during Zocor treatment
• Avoid alcohol while taking Zocor.
