• Zyban (Bupropion) is used in the treatment for smoking cessation.

• Zyban decreseas neuronal reuptake of dopamine in the central nervous system.Diminshed neuronal uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine (less than tricyclic anti-depressants).Zyban therapeutic effects : diminished depression and decreased craving for cigarettes.

• Absorption Absorption describes the process that follows drug administration and its subsequent delivery to systemic circulation. : well absorbed; rapidly and extensively metabolized by the liver.
• Distribution Drug's distribution in body tissues and fluids. : unknown.
• Metabolism and excretion Important in determining dosage regimens and intervals for persons with hepatic or impaired renal function. : extensively metabolized by the liver.Some conversion to active metabolites.
• Half life The half-life of a drug is the amount of time it takes the drug level to decrease by 50% and roughly correlates with the duration of action. : 14 hours (active metabolites may have longer half-lives).

• Zyban is contraindicated in : hypersensitivity, history of bulimia, and anorexia nervosa.Concurrent MAO inhibitor or ritonavir therapy.
• Zyban should be used cautiously in : renal/hepatic impairment (decrease dose recommended); recent history of myocardial infarction.
• Use Zyban cautiously in : geriatric patients (increased risk of drug accumulation; increased sensitivity to effects; history of suicide attempt; unstable cardiovascular status; may increase risk of suicide attempt / ideation especially during early treatment or dose adjustment; this risk may be greater in adolescents or children.
• EXTREME CAUTION : Zyban should not be used in history of seizures, head trauma or concurrent medications that decrease seizure threshold (theophylline, anti-psychotics, antidepressants, systemic corticosteroids)

• Zyban (Bupropion) adverse reactions and side effects can be : seizures, agitation, headache, insomnia, mania, psychoses, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, change in appetite, weight gain, weight loss, photosensitivity, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion, tremor.

• Oral administration (adults) - 150 mg of Zyban once daily for 3 days, then 150 mg twice daily for 7-12 weeks (doses of Zyban should be at least 8 hours apart)

• Oral administration : Zyban sustained-release (SR or XL) tablets should be swallowed whole; don't break, crush or chew.

• Take Zyban (Bupropion) as directed.Take missed dose as soon as possible and space day's remaining doses evenly at not less than 4 hours intervals.Misssed doses of Zyban for smoking cessation should be omitted.Do not double doses or take more than prescribed.Zyban may require 4 weeks or longer for full effects.
• Avoid driving and other activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known.
• Avoid alcohol during therapy and consult health care professional before taking other medications with bupropion.
• Frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene and sugarless gum or candy may minimize dry mouth.If dry mouth persists for more than 2 weeks, consult health care professional regarding use of saliva substitute.
• Notify health care professional if rash or other troublesome side effects occur.
• Unused shell of Zyban XL tablets may appear in stol; this is normal.
• Use sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent photosensitivity reactions
• Smoking should be stopped during the second week of Zyban (Bupropion) therapy to allow for the onset of bupropion and to maximize the chances of quitting.
• Zyban and Wellbutrin contain the same active ingredient and shouldn't be used together
• Zyban tablets may have an odor.This is normal
